Renting Explained is a free resource for renters. To keep the site running and continue publishing guides, we earn revenue through advertising and, where relevant, affiliate partnerships. This page explains how that works and how it does — and does not — affect our content.

Advertising: Google AdSense

We participate in the Google AdSense program, which displays ads throughout the site. AdSense ads are:

  • Selected by Google based on page content and, where permitted, your browsing activity;
  • Clearly labeled as advertisements or sponsored;
  • Not endorsed or controlled by Renting Explained; and
  • Subject to Google’s advertising policies.

Third-party vendors and ad networks, including Google, may use cookies (such as the DoubleClick DART cookie) to serve and measure ads based on your visits to this and other websites. See our Privacy Policy for how to opt out of personalized ads.

Some links on the site may be affiliate links. If you click one and sign up for or buy a product or service, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.

Affiliate links may relate to services renters use, such as:

  • Apartment listing and search services;
  • Renters insurance providers and comparison tools;
  • Credit-building and rent-reporting services; and
  • Moving and storage services.

When a link is affiliate and we are able to mark it, we disclose it. Where disclosure at the link level isn’t practical, this page serves as our standing disclosure that we may earn commissions on recommended services.

Editorial independence

Revenue does not decide what we write or how we rate anything. Specifically:

  • Advertisers and affiliate partners have no input on article topics, conclusions, or ratings;
  • They cannot review or approve articles before publication;
  • They cannot request changes to editorial content; and
  • They cannot suppress negative coverage of their products.

We only recommend products and services we believe are genuinely useful to renters, based on research and real assessment — not commission.

If we ever publish sponsored content or paid promotions, it will be clearly labeled as “Sponsored,” “Advertisement,” or “Promoted,” and the relationship will be disclosed at the top of the piece. We maintain editorial control and will not publish content we believe is misleading.

FTC compliance

This disclosure is provided in accordance with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s guidelines on the disclosure of affiliate relationships and sponsored content. We believe in transparency and want you to understand how the site is funded.
